I can't believe how bad I've been at updating. I am feeling "connection overload" what with twitter, facebook, myspace, texting, emailing, blah blah blahing. It gets overwhelming and demanding. Here's a big update; I have a large solo exhibition at a restaurant in NYC. Bar Breton, a great little french place on 5th ave has great food, is always busy, and has a great reputation as having consistently tasty food with above par service. The manager (I can't tell if he would want me shouting out his name) has graced me with hanging 20 of my pieces for a number of months. What a guy. I hung the work on Sunday with a delightful artsy friend of mine, and really, the place looks great with my work in it. We are having a big opening reception on Feb. 13th. Here are a few pics from Sunday

Some may recall this piece looking totally different. I typically revise a painting if it is hanging somewhere I can see it everyday. This is a normal practice for artist (I think?) anyway, the good folks at Innovative Arts enjoyed it so they included me in a group show at their space.

I revised my Mohunk piece. The last time I visited I got to talking with a woman behind the front desk. I gave her my card and mentioned that I had done a piece inspired by her place. She contacted me later on in the night with positivity. Her comments made me go back to the piece and rework it a bit.

Since my love for the town I have been living in for two years is a constant muse, I continually find myself creating pieces with the landmarks on the Hudson.

I foresee a few more pieces with the water tower (I loves it) then I think my continual need to include it will dissipate.

This piece, titled "Quite Hum" is in homage to the feeling I get when I walk Biko at 2am and it's dead quite. I look to the river and can hear the hum of the tankers that are transporting god knows what....scary...but the quite hum is the most comforting thing to me.

I can see the route my work is taking what with the juxtaposition (I hate that word to describe art but it's too perfect) of industrial metal structures and natures best. I am obsessed with the static something hard and strong makes when placed near a real flower or grass or an animal. I leaves me in a constant state of fight or flight, but in a positive sense. I feel like as long as I can use these two opposite ideas I can keep creating important messages, if not only for me.

In my town we have this really beautiful, rusty water tower on the Hudson. A kindred spirit has already made stickers and pasted them in the Lower Westchester area, I even saw one in the city a few weeks ago.

Although I don't LOVE this piece, I still want the people of Hastings to enjoy it, so I am going to put it up on this wall that frequently gets pieces of my work on it. I wonder if when they are removed it is a fan or an annoyed neighbor.

I was asked to do a piece for a dentists office. This isn't just any office, it is the office of someone I care deeply for. So I've worked on it for the past few months, playing jazz, not really know which direction to take. I struggled intensely with this one, but I finally snapped into creative flow and I can admit that this is one of my favorite pieces I've done to date. I certainly feel like it's the most mature and thoughtful. It is 9 panels, with an array of materials; grout, spraypaint, acrylic, and wire.

Drop off for this group show is in 2 weeks and I have 3 pieces done. I need to finish 2 more records before then.

So far, I really like the direction they are taking. Aside from the backgrounds having the same feel, little things are happening in them that are fun. Like, last night I killed this giant hornet in the living room. I usually don't kill bugs or animals, but I had company and there was a kid in my house. Anyway, I killed it and later on in the night, I took it and put it on the ass of the rhino and polyurethaned the record.

Two things that are on my list.

1. I'm taking part in a group show which should turn out to be good fun. Opening reception is, I think Oct. 5th (maybe) I am to do 5 pieces on old vinyl records. I have five ideas and am sitting here waiting for someone to push me. I have until the 29th of Sept to get them in. The Gallery, APW Gallery looks very small, I have never been, but there are 20 or 30 other artists participating so it can't be that small. I think it will be a ship shammy good time.

2. This Saturday marks the beginning of HOWL! the all encompassing art festival in the East Village. At first, I was asked to perform in the Art Battles, which is where, well artists battle. Not for blood or anything liquidy, just the crowds love and support. It's live painting and people cheer to see who goes on. Anyway, I kind of expressed some chickening out, and I think Shawn, the founder, picked up on it and suggested that I take part in the Art Around the Park section first, and then compete in the Art Battle in the following months to come. To be in the A.A.T.P entails doing live painting on a giant canvas that stretches around the perimeter of the park and each artist gets 8'x8' worth of space. I know what I'm doing already and it's going to be tight.

If anyone is interested in coming by and saying hi, it is being held in Tompkins Square Park (Heroin park) and starts at 1:00 p.m. music, dancing, art, poetry, all fun things. My trusty sidekick will be there, she just turned 5 months.

Not really, but it is nice to have someone enjoy the thing you do for fun. I am still a little uncomfortable with the idea that anyone out there, even a friend, likes and is willing, enthusiastically even, to give me money for something I make. It's crazy in a warm sort or way.

Anyway, my boy Peter was over the other night, and over homemade Sangria, he explained that he really wanted me to succeed and he loves my work. He asked me to remake the bush piece and I just finished it.

When I have to look at my own pieces for a while, if they are on my wall or in my phone or whatever, I start to hate them. It's something I'm working on. I tend to change these pieces out of frustration. I'll be sitting there reading or painting my toenails and I will get up to redo some piece of ridiculousness hanging by wire above my table.

These 2 are right above my head at my computer / utility table. I can't tell if they are more appealing or more obnoxious.

I have been on this one for a longer time than usual. I started it before I started this blog so I didn't think to take "progress" pics, but let me tell you, if any would have been a fun time to watch, this would have been it. I started in a direction that is totally opposite the final product. There are so many levels to this piece, and I don't mean levels in the pretentious art world way of using the word levels. I mean, there are like, 8 layers of paper alone. Spray paint was sprayed over and over because I couldn't get it right. The wheat paste wouldn't adhere properly, more layers.

It just would have been neat. Too bad

p.s. I've added the close up image because I thought it's cool to have a bit of secret knowledge into the creative process on this one. The parachutes are balled up pieces of this months Urban Outfitters catalog. They have on many occasions helped my artwork. Thanks guys

Work in progress. For the last 8 years I have tried really, really hard to stay away from anti Bush pieces. I just did. However, a few days ago I was half listening to him address the nation, and half painting my toenails, and lost it. I just cannot listen to him anymore, it is sad and lonely, he just trying miserably to get a few last notions of strong leadership in before he is gone. No one is listening anymore. Just stop it now.

So, I am currently working on this piece. It is a blah piece, and once it's done I am going to leave it somewhere in the city, on the side of the road, probably in Chelsea, and I don't care what happens to it. Poof...be gone
